Sociolinguistics: Video Review
Hello my readers, it is been a long time since i posted the last blog. I have been bussy lately, so i do not have time to write an article or something.
In this opportunity i would like review the video and explain the sociolinguistics context in vlog by Nessie Judge and the title is "Tinggal Di Perancis Gimana Rasanya?".
The video is tell about daily activity of Nessie Judge in France, especially her college activity. Well, do you know Nessie Judge? If don't, i will tell who she is. She is a youtuber and social media influencer. She is a Pakistan, Dutch, and Chinese descent. She was born in Indonesia and her first language is Bahasa, but she also can speak English. She able to speak English because she study at International school since she was young. Usually she makes a video about horror story, but in this video she makes a vlog about her daily activity in France. She live in France because she study at IPMI International Business School and the major field is Business Administration.
But, before i start the review, i would like to explain some sociolinguistics terms. So, you can understand my review.
First, code switching, is when speaker alternates between two or more language (or dialects or variety of language) in one conversation. Second, code mixing, is when speaker combine two (or more) language in one communication/conversation. Both code mixing and code switching mostly occurs in bilingual comunities. Bilingual Comunities is people who can speak in two different language. I think that is enough for the indtroduction, now let's start the review.
In the beginning of the video, Nessie greet the viewer and say "Good Morning everyone" and then she talks in bahasa, tell the viewer why she makes this video. Then, she told the viewer the weather in France, and show what she wears. She said, "I dressed like eskimo" (minute 0:30). It provide that she use code mixing, because she talked in Bahasa and mixing the language with English. She also use code mixing in the minute 1:23, she said "Yeah as you can see, masih gelap". Not only the code mixing, she also use code switching. In the minute 5:37, she said "...completly free, gratis buat semua murid". It is a code switching because she talks the word "Free" and translate it in Bahasa "gratis". It provide that she is a bilingual comunity, because she able to speak in two languages (Bahasa & English) and mix or switch the language. From her family background and environment, she can speak in two language and can be defined as bilingual community. If you want to watch the full video, you can click the video below.
That's all my review and sociolinguistics analysis about vlog by Nessie judge. I hope you understand my explanation and can get a new knowledge from it.
Thank you and see you in the next post :)
