We know that English as our second language, so usually we use subtitle to understand the meaning, but we does not realize when we use subtitle we learn English through the subtitle. As movie lovers, of course I often watch movie with subtitle, so when I read the title of this journal I curious and decided to review this Journal. May be when I am a teacher in the future, I can use this method in the classroom. But first I will give the description of the journal and then review the introduction of the journal.

Journal Description

Title : Subtitle in the Second Language Classroom
Writer : Ingrid Elisabeth Nufsfjord Kvitnes
Year of Publication : 2013
Country : Norwegia
Language : English

Abstract

This study has explored the use of subtitles in second language acquisition for Norwegian learners of English. We used participants from the VG1 level in upper secondary school; the experiment had two experimental groups and a control group who watched the same video clip with or without subtitles. We found that subtitles aided comprehension of plot in the initial round of testing in addition to the participants’ vocabulary size, and this was established through the use of a simple comprehension questionnaire. We also tested for long term effects of learning by using a word definition task and a lexical decision task and found that the subtitles were not predictors of performance. The participants’ proficiency level was more important as a predictor, through vocabulary size and input interaction. An experiment with back translation for the Norwegian subtitles showed no signs of priming.

Journal Review : Introduction

The Introduction tell the goal of this project was to get a better knowledge of the influence of subtitles on second language acquisition for Norwegian learners of English. The writer think, as a teacher we should use every aspect of language that can be used in learning process, for example, subtitle. We can use audiovisual media as a media in learning process. In this project the writer uses videoclip with subtitle on it.

There is a question that can be a reason why the writer start this project, “Can subtitles influence the pupils’ learning process?”. To explore the conditions of this issue, the writer do research within three groups at upper secondary level, VG1, and show them the same film clip with different subtitles or without.
